PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, Y’ALL: HOW WALTER QUIT BEIN’ LOW-DOWN by Allegra Jordan (Gold Gable Press, Fall 2018).
It’s 1979 and vicious New York Times food critic Walter St. Bingen has just been mashed by karma. He is humiliated and expelled from lofty culinary heights he once ruled. A rich aunt suggests he go visit her family in Alabama and sit out the unpleasantness in New York City. Walter arrives in Alabama at the start of football season only to insult local football customs, religion, food, pee-wee football and a basset hound. Unfortunately for Walter, everyone in Cahaba County – including the basset hound – has an agenda that involves him doing their bidding. As the townsfolk manipulate their new toy (Walter), it slowly dawns on Walter that he may want to change his ways to save his low-down, dirty, snitch of a soul.
